Crazy Love by Francis Chan

Crazy Love is a wakeup call to be on fire for Christ. Author Francis Chan writes, "This book is written for those who want more Jesus. It is for those who are bored with what American Christianity offers. It is for those who don't want to plateau, those who would rather die before their convictions do."

Now, this book wasn't written to bash churches, but instead explores some hard questions that all of us must face if we truly want to surrender ourselves totally to God's purposes. In fact, Chan's love for the church is made obvious throughout the book. As a pastor himself in Simi Valley, California, Chan says, "I'm going back to scripture and seeing what the church was in its simplest form and trying to recreate that in my own church. I'm not coming up with anything new. I'm calling people to go back to the way it was. I'm not bashing the church. I'm loving it."

The first three chapters in the book describe the sacred and eternal characteristics of God, while the remaining seven chapters call us to examine ourselves and our relationship with Him. The overall theme of the book is based on the conclusion that even though we're saved by grace, our faith should still produce great works.

Chan writes, "It's exhilarating to be part of a group of believers who are willing to think biblically rather than conventionally, to be part of a body where radical living is becoming the norm . . . We are going to look at how the Bible calls us to live our lives . . . The core problem isn't the fact that we're lukewarm, halfhearted, or stagnant Christians. The crux of it all is why we are this way, and it is because we have an inaccurate view of God. We see Him as a benevolent Being who is satisfied when people manage to fit Him into their lives in some small way. We forget that God never had an identity crisis. He knows that He's great and deserves to be the center of our lives. Jesus came humbly as a servant, but He never begs us to give Him some small part of ourselves. He commands everything from His followers."

Chan simply wants Christians to live differently, because at the moment too many of us are practically indistinguishable from the unbelievers around us. And this is not the way God wants it to be.
