One quick comment about how important our ushers are to the mission and ministry of the church! Remember, you're not here to simply "hand out worship folders" or to just "take the offering." You are Christ's ambassadors and spokesmen for His Church in our community. The way you greet and treat visitors and members leaves a lasting impression. And you know that what they say about an “impression" is true: You only get that one chance to make it!
Guidelines - Arrive at least thirty minutes before the service, put on a name tag and a smile, and check with the Pastor’s Assistants to see if there are any special instructions for the service. A "Serving Together in Mission & Ministry" schedule will be available for you to check.
- Greet the people warmly; welcome them to our worship. Families with small children should be informed that we do have a Nursery available and told of its location. Note: One usher armed with an umbrella should be stationed outside under the canopy to assist people in bad weather.
- Assist where needed by lending a helping hand if necessary so our worship is orderly and the worship details like the following are covered:
| | _____ Friendship folders on center aisle chairs
| | _____ Communion tables positioned
| | | _____ Proper lighting and altar floodlights
| | _____ Containers for children’s worship bags
| | | _____ Altar candles lit 3 minutes prior to service | | _____ After worship chairs/items returned |
- Position yourself at the main entrance into the Multipurpose Room to hand out worship folders and inside the multipurpose room to assist worshipers to a seat. One usher should be selected to greet late comers and assist them in finding a seat if needed.
- Collect the Prayer Cards and Offering at the appropriate times and keep a watchful eye on the young people at all times when not supervised by an adult. Be creative in helping to keep noise level down etc.
- After the worship, assist in the clean up, making sure all items are properly stored and help to prepare the areas for the rest of the week’s activities.
- When entering and leaving the chancel/altar area, stop – bow slightly towards the altar – and proceed. This is to show reverence and honor to our God and our Lord.
- If you are assisting with communion, check the separate folder on the table by the double doors for detailed instructions and procedures for that worship service.
