June & July 2009 - PENTECOST SERMON THEMES

Of all the Seasons of the Church Year (Advent-Christmas-Epiphany-Lent-Easter-Pentecost), the Pentecost Season is the longest, lasting twenty-six weeks from June through November.  On that first PENTECOST over 2000 years ago, the Holy Spirit was unleashed upon Jesus' disciples and upon the world.   As the disciples were once sent, so we, the baptized children of God are empowered by the Spirit, and to this day, are also sent out to be God's witness of Christ's love.  With the saints of old may we daily pray and live out day by day these power-packed words: "Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful people, and kindle in us the fire...the fire-power of Your love.  Amen."

Thanks for clicking on our church's website. As you search the site, we pray that you will get a real sense that Heart of the Shepherd Lutheran Church, truly is

"A church with a  for you!"

We welcome any comments and questions about our God, church, and ministry, and I will personally respond back to you or forward your requests or questions to the proper Ministry Team Leader(s) who will contact you.

As you read about our church's ministries, you might come across the word HOTS (short for HEART OF  THE SHEPHERD).  There are some who have commented on the fact that the word HOTS might give people the wrong impression about our church, since that word brings to mind a variety of thoughts and images, not all good and godly.

We use the word HOTS (short for HEART OF THE SHEPHERD) around here without any reservation, for it is an excellent reminder as to exactly what we are to be for our Lord as His church here in the Howell/Fowlerville/Brighton communities.

Here at HOTS we believe that the warning our Lord gave to one of the seven churches in the Book of Revelation was spoken also to us:

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!  So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
(Revelation 3:15-16)

I'll never forget how Pastor John Nunes paraphrased that verse at a conference I attended: "A lukewarm Christian (I'd add 'and Christian church') can't tell a cold world about a hell that's hot and a God that's good"

There's no doubt that HOTS - HEART OF THE SHEPHERD (as well as every other Christian church and every Christian), needs to be purified and refined in the fires of the
Good Shepherd's love and compassion and on fire for our Lord!

May we GLOW with the fire of our Lord's love and compassion as we GO for our Lord!
